SHINGLE ISLAND RIVER

On what looks to be the latest in the year that I have been able to kayak; Des and I got a chance to get yet another trip in for the 2015 season. It was nearly 60 degrees, and a perfect day to be out on the river in Dartmouth.

I won't bore you with the detail of the river. For that you can check my previous blogs from this season for Shingle Island River where I go into the river itself.

One thing I did want to mention is that it was the end of shotgun season today, and we ran in to a guy by the train bridge who we chatted with for a while. He made a good point that this time of the year it would be best to wear some bright colors as you travel up the river. I hadn't really thought about it today, and it was a good point I wanted to pass on. Though he said Des and I were loud enough, he could hear us coming a few minutes before we were in sight.

Also this late in the season all the lily pads are down underwater, but don't be fooled by what looks like a clear path. You have to stick to the channel when coming in and out by Reed Road, because the shallows are still full of tangling plants for you to get stuck in.

It was great to get out in mid-December. It is a first for me, but the weather has been fair, and water levels are great. 2015 is turning out to be one of the best seasons so far. Maybe I'll get in a Christmas Eve run?!?
